A New User Experience

Windows 10X features a new user interface that is adaptive, consistent, and fluid. It has been built with modern technologies and does not include any legacy elements from Windows 10.

A New Start Menu

The Start menu in Windows 10X is a simple and sleek launcher that lets you access your apps, files, and web pages. It does not have any tiles, live previews, or folders. Instead, it has a search bar at the top, a grid of pinned apps in the middle, and a list of recent activities at the bottom. You can also customize the Start menu by adding or removing apps, changing the layout, and adjusting the size.

A New Taskbar

The Taskbar in Windows 10X is a centered and fluid bar that adapts to the device and the app you are using. It does not have any icons for Cortana, File Explorer, or Action Center. Instead, it has a Start button, a Task View button, and icons for the apps you are running. You can also swipe up on the Taskbar to reveal more icons for system settings, battery, network, volume, and keyboard. You can also swipe down on the Taskbar to hide it or lock the device.

A New Action Center

The Action Center in Windows 10X is a revamped panel that combines quick settings and notifications. It slides from the right edge of the screen and shows you the most important information and actions you need. You can toggle settings like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Airplane mode, Rotation lock, and Night light. You can also see your notifications from apps and dismiss them with a swipe. You can also access your calendar and music controls from the Action Center.

A New Way to Run Apps

Windows 10X is designed to run modern apps that are fast, secure, and responsive. It does not support traditional desktop apps that are based on Win32 or .NET frameworks. Instead, it supports apps that are built with UWP (Universal Windows Platform) or PWA (Progressive Web App) technologies. These apps can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store or from the web.

Modern Apps Only

Windows 10X only runs modern apps that are optimized for touchscreens, pen input, and flexible postures. These apps are also sandboxed and isolated from each other and from the system, which means they cannot access or modify any files or settings outside their own scope. This makes them more secure and reliable than desktop apps.

Container Technology

However, Windows 10X also has a way to run legacy Win32 apps that are not compatible with UWP or PWA standards. It uses a container technology that creates a virtual environment for each Win32 app and runs it in a separate window. This way, the Win32 app can run without affecting the performance or security of Windows 10X. However, this feature is not available in the current version of Windows 10X and will be added in a future update.

Adaptive Postures

Windows 10X also has a feature called adaptive postures that allows it to adjust the app layout depending on how you use your device. For example, if you have a dual-screen or foldable device like the Surface Neo or the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold, you can use Windows 10X in different modes such as laptop mode, tablet mode, tent mode, or book mode. In each mode, Windows 10X will arrange the apps on both screens in a way that makes sense for your task. For example, in book mode, you can read an e-book on one screen and take notes on the other.

A New Level of Security

Windows 10X is also more secure than Windows 10 because it is built on top of a new version of Windows called Windows Core OS that removes many legacy components and features that are not needed for modern PCs. It also has a stateless design that separates the user data from the system files and updates automatically in the background. It also encrypts the device by default and requires a PIN or biometric authentication to unlock it.

Windows Core OS

Windows Core OS is a new version of Windows that is modular and lightweight. It only includes the essential components and features that are required for modern PCs and devices. It does not include any legacy elements like Control Panel, Registry Editor, Command Prompt, or File Explorer. Instead, it uses modern alternatives like Settings app, UWP File Explorer, PowerShell Core, or Windows Terminal. Windows Core OS is also more flexible and scalable than Windows 10 because it can be customized for different types of devices like PCs, tablets, phones, consoles, or HoloLens.

Stateless OS

Windows 10X is also a stateless OS that separates the user data from the system files. This means that all your personal files and settings are stored in a separate partition that is encrypted and protected from any system changes or updates. This makes Windows 10X faster and more reliable than Windows 10 because it does not have to deal with any fragmentation, corruption, or bloatware issues. It also makes Windows 10X easier to update because it can download and install the latest version of the system in the background without affecting your work or data. You can also reset or restore Windows 10X to its factory settings without losing any of your files or settings.

Device Encryption

Windows 10X also encrypts the device by default using BitLocker technology. This means that all your data is protected from unauthorized access or theft. You can also use a PIN or biometric authentication like fingerprint or face recognition to unlock your device. Windows 10X also supports Windows Hello, which is a feature that allows you to sign in to your device and apps using your face, iris, or fingerprint.

How to Download Windows 10X?

If you want to try out Windows 10X on your PC, you will need a supported device or an emulator. You will also need to download the latest Windows 10X ISO file from Microsoft's website and create a bootable USB drive with it. Then, you can install Windows 10X on your device or emulator by following the steps below.

Requirements

Before you download and install Windows 10X, you need to make sure that you have the following requirements:

Supported Devices

Windows 10X is designed for new PCs that have dual-screen or foldable displays. However, it can also run on some existing devices that have similar specifications. Here are some of the devices that are compatible with Windows 10X:

  • Surface Neo: This is Microsoft's own dual-screen device that has two 9-inch displays that can fold together like a book. It has an Intel Lakefield processor, 8 GB of RAM, and 256 GB of storage. It also comes with a detachable keyboard and a Surface Pen.

  • Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold: This is Lenovo's first foldable PC that has a single 13.3-inch display that can bend in half like a laptop or unfold like a tablet. It has an Intel Core i5 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and 256 GB of storage. It also comes with a Bluetooth keyboard and a Lenovo Mod Pen.

  • Dell Concept Duet: This is Dell's prototype of a dual-screen device that has two 13.4-inch displays that can work together or independently. It has an Intel Core i7 processor, 16 GB of RAM, and 512 GB of storage. It also comes with a magnetic keyboard and a Dell Active Pen.

If you don't have any of these devices, you can still use an emulator to run Windows 10X on your PC.
