Hum Apke Hai Kon (Who Am I to You?) is a 1994 Indian Hindi-language musical romantic drama film written and directed by Sooraj Barjatya and produced by Rajshri Productions. Plot
The film revolves around two families, the Choudhurys and the Bhats. The Choudhurys consist of Professor Siddharth (Anupam Kher), his wife Madhukala (Reema Lagoo), their daughter Pooja (Renuka Shahane), and their younger daughter Nisha (Madhuri Dixit). The Bhats consist of Kailashnath (Alok Nath), his elder son Rajesh (Mohnish Bahl), his younger son Prem (Salman Khan), and their dog Tuffy. Rajesh is a successful businessman who runs a company with his father. Prem is a carefree college student who loves music and sports.

The two families are friends and arrange a marriage between Rajesh and Pooja. During the wedding preparations, Prem and Nisha meet and fall in love with each other. However, they keep their feelings hidden for the sake of their families. After the wedding, Pooja and Rajesh move to their new house, while Nisha stays with her parents. Prem visits them often and spends time with Nisha. They also exchange letters secretly with the help of Tuffy.
One day, Pooja invites Nisha to stay with her for a few days. Nisha agrees and goes to Pooja's house. There, she meets Rajesh's friend Lalloo Prasad (Laxmikant Berde), who falls in love with her at first sight. He tries to impress her with his antics, but fails miserably. Meanwhile, Prem also comes to visit Pooja and Rajesh. He and Nisha continue their romance under the pretext of helping Lalloo woo Nisha.
However, tragedy strikes when Pooja dies after falling from the stairs while pregnant. Rajesh is devastated by her death and blames himself for not taking care of her. He also becomes depressed and neglects his work and his newborn son. Nisha takes care of the baby and tries to console Rajesh. Siddharth and Kailashnath decide to get Nisha married to Rajesh for the sake of the baby and their families. They announce their decision to everyone without consulting Nisha or Rajesh.
Nisha is shocked by this news and feels guilty for betraying Prem. She writes a letter to Prem explaining everything and asking him to forget her. She gives the letter to Tuffy to deliver it to Prem. However, Tuffy gets confused and gives the letter to Rajesh instead. Rajesh reads the letter and realizes that Nisha loves Prem and not him. He also understands that he still loves Pooja and cannot marry Nisha.
Prem defends himself and says that he loves Nisha sincerely and did not want to hurt anyone. He also says that he respects Rajesh and Pooja and would never try to take their place. He pleads with Siddharth to accept his love for Nisha and bless their union. Nisha also supports Prem and says that she cannot marry Rajesh as she loves Prem. She also says that she considers Rajesh as her brother-in-law and respects him.

Siddharth is moved by their words and realizes that they are truly in love. He apologizes to Prem and Nisha and gives them his consent. Kailashnath also agrees to their marriage and praises Rajesh for his sacrifice and maturity. Rajesh also apologizes to Prem and Nisha and wishes them happiness. He also thanks Nisha for taking care of his son and asks her to be his godmother. Nisha agrees and hugs him.
Prem and Nisha get married with the blessings of their families and friends. They also promise to take care of Rajesh's son as their own. The film ends with a happy family photo of the Choudhurys and the Bhats.
